Wednesday 24th Febuary 2010As we approach the final month of the current season, eyes are on the league table to see who can claim the top spot. Current leader Mick McGowan has had a good run of recent form that has seen him surpass Dan 'Spaniel' Coppard. Last night Dan had a massive oppurtunity to take first place after finishing second in the first game, and Mick managing only 1% of the points. At half-time Dan was actually in pole postition being only around 100 points clear, he know the pressure was on to maintain his position. The second game finished ironically with Mick in second place and Dan gaining only 1%. So the table remained unchanged, with Stuart King performing well to maintain third place, but Dave Phillipson picking up vital points to challenge the position. Dave is now top of The George Inn after over taking Matt 'Hates Eights' Phillipson who seems to have still not recovered from the shock of last weeks events (see below). I should also point out that the current prize pot is looking like it should surpass the £700 eastimated pot for the end of season tournament. We hope to announce a date and venue very soon. |
Wednesday 17th Febuary 2010I will be looking to add a 'Teddy out the pram' section to website very soon if the bad beats continue the way they have been..... Last night current top of the league position Mick McGowan bust Bryan Marriott's Ace-King with a 6-2 combo on the big blind. Bryan let Mick check the big blind and Mick hit the two and possible flush draw. Mick ended up winning the hand with a flush draw, and the 'teddys were out the pram' for Bryan. Bryan pushed 2500 chips all in blind as a result and got 3 callers. The flop came Q 8 4. Matt Phillipson pushed all-in and everyone else folded. Matt revealed three of a kind with pocket queens, Bryan remained blind. The turn brought another 8, and Matt was looking good with a full house. The river was a seemingly un-important 8. Bryan started to push the chips towards Matt, until it was pointed out that the only card that could save Bryan was the case eight. The first card over was the elusive eight, and Bryan punched the air. Matt took the beat extremely well, just smiling. Bryan went on to take 2nd place from 16 runners, and the teddys were back in the pram. |

Saturday 30th January 2010Today was our end of season tournament for the previous season. The event was held at The George Inn at Henfield, who provided excellent hospitality, refreshments and food, there was even a band on downstairs for after the tournament! The event was sponsored by HK group and David Hayes and Stuart King were on hand to present the trophies and medals to winners of the venues and the league. The event started just after 1pm with five full tables of players. Commiserations go to Tom Bowles who after arriving a little late was the first to bust out, closely followed by Kevin Walton; a previous end of season winner. As the blinds started to increase, the number of players began to dwindle, with four people having four of a kind during the day the action was amazing. Food was served at 4pm at which point we broke the game down to the final 16. Paul Carey was way out in front, having nearly double the chips of the closest contender. Eyes were on Steve Prescott with just 3,000 chips facing blinds of 1K/2K, but first to bust out was Mick McGowan..... Then Steve Prescott. The battle for final table hotted up with players doing their best to remain in the game. Matt Phillipson bust out to Emily Nesbitt and missed out on the final table, making the final eight all set to go and a massive chip advantage for Emily. After a short break play resumed and Emily hadn't given up on the Phillipson family, after busting out Dave Phillipson soon after for 8th place. James Ellis bust out in 7th with Emily taking his chips and now having most of the chips on the table. Gary Burfield-Wallis took 6th place busting out to Paul Carey, but Paul didn't survive for long after becoming another of Emily's victims and taking 5th place. Craig Martin had been playing a tight game all day and hoped to make the cash prizes, but he had to settle for 4th and busting out to Chloe Walton in a hand that totally changed the dynamic of the game. The final three were now, Emily Nesbitt, Dan Coppard and Chloe Walton. Emily still had the advantage, but both Chloe and Dan had won big pots meaning they were never far behind. Emily's downfall was to be King-Jack, three times she had raised and three times Dan had re-raised, having folded twice already, she couldn't fold a third time and got beat by Dan's Ace-Queen. Emily took third place, a trophy and £50 in Cash. The heads up was a very cautious affair with neither player wanting to commit many chips pre-flop, both Dan and Chloe had a similar number of chips. The game almost came to an end when Dan went all-in with Ace-Queen and Chloe called with Ace-Five. Dan had more chips, and if he could dodge a five it was all over, Chloe hit the five and left Dan with a few consolation chips. Dan pushed All-in again with Jack-Ten and Chloe had value to call despite holding Nine-Two. The river card was a bitter Nine and the game was complete. Dan took second place, a trophy and £100 in Cash. Chloe claimed the first place trophy and £200 in Cash.

Tuesday 26th January 2010Today the directors of GPL headed off the International Gaming Expo at Earls Court in London to mingle with the big boys of the gaming world. We got to see all the latest developments in poker chip technology, sample every kind of playing card known to man, sit at some of the most expensive poker tables in world (the one on the left is a cool £18,000!) and meet some of the other companies we have been working very closely with. The day was a great success and GPL took away more than just samples of cards and chips. We met a few companies that we hope will supply us with the next big purchase of chips, cards and tables. We also have big plans in the pipeline as a direct result of the visit, in all it was a great oppurtunity for GPL to get its name on the map, get some insight on the gaming world and take our company to the next level. |
Saturday 16th January 2010We hosted a one-off event for Lewes Hockey Club at the Southdown Sports Club in Lewes. Catering for new players and people with some experience, we provided two tables, and dedicated dealers. The event was well received by all and allowed people that have never played before get a gentle introduction to the world of Texas Hold 'Em. The event brought together players from the hockey team, who in recent weeks hadn't played any hockey due the snow that has hit the South Coast. The night was a good team bonding experience that Lewes Hockey Club will be looking to repeat in the near Future. |

Saturday 9th January 2010The day that never quite made it. Due to the extreme weather conditions that we were experiencing in the early of part of January, the management team at Gunpowder Poker decided to postpone the End of Season Tournament scheduled for Saturday the 9th of January. Whilst we are sure you share our disappointment with this decision, we hope you agree we have a responsibility to balance this with the health and safety concerns of our valued players, employees and other stakeholders. We have now re-scheduled the tournament for Saturday the 30th of January at The George Inn, Henfield. The photo on the left is Henfield High Street, you can see the GPL van covered in thick layer of snow! |
Tuesday 5th January 2010Arriving at Henfield we knew there was potential for some snow, and that we could of been in for an eventful journey home. That night we were happy yo welcome three new players, Andrea & Samantha Newman and their friend Stina Sheyne. They were lucky enough to get a crash course in poker, after dealing what seemed to be the dream example hand we explained the various hand rankings, pointing out that a full house is usually a winning hand, and that any hand higher is extremely rare, only for Samantha to get four of a kind in the first game, and quad sixes to appear in the second game to the dispair of Steve Prescott. |
